Our Impact
Conservation Support
Tarakwai supports Marine Cultures, a non-profit organization on the island of Zanzibar. Their work includes restoring damaged reefs with corals that are resistant to high temperatures and cultivating sponges, which has become a new profession for women. We donate 2.5% of our profits towards their efforts and also offer tours where you can wade through the intertidal area where sponges are cultivated.
“Nowadays, life has become harder because of rising prices. With my farmed products, I can earn money. I am divorced, single mother and I really need it. The income I have now is just enough to pay the education of my children and to buy better food for all of us. Plus, I could begin the process of building my own house. The sponges have really changed my life.” - Nasir Hassan Haji
Eco-friendly Lodges
We place a high importance on, and actively seek out lodges that strive to lessen their ecological footprint - whether through the use of solar power energy, locally-sourced and manufactured structures, to the recycling of water. We include these lodges as often as we can in our itineraries.
Living Wages
We value our guides very highly. All our guides are provided with a wage that goes above industry standards. We understand their work depends on the volume of tours, which can be erratic. To offset some of this variability, we do our best to not only provide fair wages, but also training opportunities whenever they arise.
Reducing Plastic
We are continually exploring solutions to lessen the excessive use of plastics used by lodges for packing safari lunches and distributing water. We have already incorporated a number of alternatives, including providing our guests with steel water thermos bottles and reusable food containers.
