Ushongo (Pangani)
Ushongo, just south of Pangani, is the perfect place for those looking for something off the beaten track or in search of an untouched stretch of beach. Ushongo is situated in a beautiful bay where the gentle tide allows for all day swimming. Being in a beachfront cottage, you can enjoy the local, unspoilt sight of the fishing dhows going out at dawn, the children making their way up the beach to school and many local sites and activities.
Ushongo beach is one of the best places in Tanzania to see turtle hatchlings. Generally, turtles nest year-round on the Tanzanian coast, but the peak nesting season falls from April–May. Two months later, turtles start to hatch, making June to August the best time to see the process.
Nearby is Maziwe Island, a beautiful sandbank 8km off the coastline, surrounded by coral reefs. It is accessible by boat only, and snorkelling is some of the finest on the East African coast.
